This Christmas Specsavers Opticas in Santa Ponça wants to raise awareness of kidney disease and raise money for research to find a cure. Kidney disease affects 1 in 10 people in Europe, but many people don’t know they have it or that they are even at risk. It can affect anyone at any age and without warning. It can’t currently be cured and is responsible for thousands of deaths every year – many of which could be prevented with better diagnosis and improved treatments.

Martin Blake, Store Director of Specsavers Opticas, recently helped his brother-in-law by donating one of his kidneys and has raised over 1,300€ so far this year for the cause. Martin’s ambition is to raise 2,000€, so throughout December there will be collecting donations in store. All funds collected will be split between Kidney Research UK and ALCER Spain.

Specsavers also collaborate with Calvia Lions Club to organize regular diabetes testing events and tested around 150 people in 2015. The November screening to celebrate World Diabetes Day tested 40 people and referred three people to seek medical attention due to the test results. They are planning their first testing event for 2016 which will be held at the end of January.
