On 21st June 2013 at 20.00 Louise Stone, Store Director of Specsavers Opticas in Calpe together with Optometrist Cecilia Navarro Tudela, will present a one hour talk about the positive and negative effects of the sun and how to make the most of the sun safely. This event, to mark World Day of the Sun, will take place in the Casa de la Cultura in Calpe and is free to attend.

It will cover the benefits which exposure to the sun can cause, such as healthy levels of Vitamin D, but also look at the negative elements such as skin cancer and how to protect yourself. The main  focus, however, will  be on the subject  of how  the sun can damage your eyes.

Louise  explains “I look forward to sharing information and advice about enjoying the sun safely with Calpe residents. What many people do not know is that excessive exposure to UV rays causes a painful irritation to the cornea at the front of the eye. In extreme circumstances this can cause permanent damage to the cornea, age related macular degeneration, cataracts and even blindness. I hope this seminar can help local people to protect themselves against the harmful effects of the sun and enjoy a great summer!”

As well as protecting your skin with high factor sun protection, a hat and light clothing, it is recommended that everyone should wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun. Check sunglasses comply with UNE-EN 1836:2006 + A1:2008 or bear the CE kite mark and are marked UV 400 and select styles which are large, or wraparound to minimise light entering the eyes from the side.

No need to book your place, please just turn up Casa de la Cultura at 20.00 on 21st June.To find out more about the event please call Specsavers Calpe on 965 835 367.

Specsavers Opticas Calpe is offering a free UV protection test for sunglasses. Take your glasses to Avda de los Ejércitos Españoles 6 to make sure your eyes are protected.
