In October 2018, Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea and Calpe collected two boxes of donated glasses for a special project. In December, the recycled glasses made their way to Sri Lanka to help give the gift of sight to some of the world’s poorest people.

The glasses were supplied to Ayubowan Youth, a charity project, located in the Matara region of Sri Lanka. The charity was able to distribute the reading glasses to many grateful recipients including children from two schools in the Hulandawa tea estate, elders from the nearby Buddhist temples and villagers who had travelled from far and wide.

A spokesperson from the charity who helped hand out the glasses said: ‘they [the villagers] told us that glasses are hard to get hold of as they don’t have transport to go to the big cities and they are also very expensive for poor families.’ The charity works alongside the local teachers in the region, with the English teacher even checking the eye-sight of some of the children and providing them with glasses when possible.

Unused or unwanted glasses can be donated at any of the nine stores on the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Mallorca. Find you nearest store here: www.specsavers.es/stores
